Entrevista a Gelbart:

Y finalmente ... ¿sos fan de 'Klaus und Klaus'? Me gusta más 'Gallagher and Gallagher'.

Interview to Gelbart

How did Gelbart originate? Is there a big difference since you moved to Berlin?
It sort of started when I gave up on doing more 'serious' modern classical music – it seemed to always be dark and gloomy, and besides it was yesterday's avant guard. I wanted to do experimental stuff that was based on the music of our time. I had 3000$ that I saved for a few years, so I spent them on the basic stuff (sampler, mixer, LA synth, effects unit) and got to working. Since then my music has developed in different directions, with more guitars, less reverb and older equipment, and I've also started building some of my own instruments. I'm always influenced by the environment I live in, so Berlin obviously made a difference but I wouldn't know how to define it in words. I guess my music got noisier and weirder, because Berlin is so beautiful and peaceful that I feel compelled to sort of fuck it up.

We've been looking at the list of stuff you used to record 'The Eleventh Voyage' 7", and it's pretty amazing! Can you tell us how your recording sessions usually are?
Most of the times I start out with improvising stuff to my Grundig reel to reel tape. It could be live drums, or guitar, or unsynchronized drum machines mixed together. Then I run through the recording and sample interesting ideas, and start working the song from there. Then there's really no system – sometimes I'll write melodies on my synthesizers, sometimes go with a bass guitar riff, whatever I feel like at the moment (in 'everybody jumped ship and died' – it was a trumpet). Actually in the case of the Eleventh Voyage I was also working from text – the Ijon Tichy stories of Stanislaw Lem – so I got some ideas and inspiration there.

We read somewhere that you mention Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Satie and Devo as your favorites; to us, your music sounds a lot like Der Plan, Palais Schaumburg, The Wirschaftswunder or Saal 2, are we stereotyping you just because you're in Germany or are those early 80s bands a real influence?
Palais Schaumburg and Holger Hiller are definitely an influence, as are other NDW bands (I love DAF!). These early 80s experiments were - as I see it - one of the golden ages of electronic music. Other than that and 60s Moog music, I must say I don't have too much interest in "electronic music".

What kind of music have you listened to when you were a teenager?
In school I passed through the obvious stages of Beatles to Dylan to loving prog rock to denying I ever listened to prog rock to Velvet Underground (I also had a Vangelis stage somewhere in the middle). Then in high school I was really into certain stuff in jazz and modern classical music, especially Messiaen. My older brother introduced me to lots of alternative stuff like Gang of Four, The Fall, Bauhaus, DAF etc. I had a band at the time and we tried to violently combine all this stuff together – I think some of it was actually quite good.

Are you in charge of the visuals of the band (cover art, website ...)?
I do all the visual stuff myself. I see it as an important part of the musical work.

You're producing a band of cows (The Lonesomes), made them a documentary, videoclips ... Do you think in the future you could summon more bands into the cow-fi? Why not add other mamals, or even reptiles?
I've actually also worked with dogs, cats and sheep (like in the song MCYP on my Myspace page). Reptiles can't play drums and they smell.

Do you think that if we don't use drugs, work out and listen to Gelbart every day our life would get healthier and healthier?
Yes. But health is way overrated.

And finally ... Are you a Klaus und Klaus fan?
I'm more into Gallagher and Gallagher.
